RAM's Race Notes:
Race winner Sean Mendes became the 10th fastest runner ever at KWGC. Despite no other elite runners, Baker and Hagerty posted the 3rd and 5th best team times ever on this course. Baker's pack pushed it hard from the get-go, but the Hagerty runners bided their time and saved their big push for the final K. At the mile there were 9 runners between 5:30 and 5:40 -- 2 Hagerty, 6 Baker and 1 KW. By 2M. it was down to 2 Bulldogs and 2 Huskies. If was a true dogfight. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) The Hagerty lads put the hammer down with a half-mile to go and pulled away. Zack ran a very strong final K (14:40 at 4K, so 3:30 for final 1000m). and climbed from 7th to 4th. The 13-second finish margin between the winner and Zack was significantly smaller than it had been at 4K.
Zack's 18:10 is the 2nd best ever by a KW runner at the golf course, and only 9 seconds off Zack Black's school record. Mike and Aeschton pushed/pulled each other to huge PR's -- Mike moved up to #24 on the all-time/all-course Key West list, with Aeschton just a tick behind in 26th. Only 2 of the runners ahead of them on that list ran their PR's at KWGC, so it will be interesting to see how much they -- and everyone else -- can climb once they get on the flatter courses and in the larger fields of the next 3 weeks.
Ash is #2 on the KW freshman list now, and Justin has climbed to 8th. Zack is #2 junior.
But the best stat news was the team time. Only twice in 2007 did the Conchs break 20:00 for a 5-man average: at FLrunners (19:50.2) and at Districts (19:45.2). So given the course (KWGC) and the time of the season (1st official race), today's 19:51.4 average really raises an eyebrow. Even Eder's 2006 team only bettered 20-flat 3 times, with the best being on the Radice runway at FLrunners (19:37). There's a long way to go to reach the 17:59.4 School Record, but the KWGC record of 19:28.4 could be in serious jeopardy at the County Meet.
Every KW finisher (in both races) ran a significant season best (SB). These were the boys' numbers:
Zack 1:26
Mike 1:28
Ash 1:39
Ricky 1:50
Vincent :38
Justin 2:04
Jamel 1:45
Trout 6:39 !!!!!
Gareth 4:56 !!!
Those are extremely encouraging results. Hard work does indeed pay off. You end up flat on your back at the end of a workout, your subsequent race performances will most likely make you happy. Keep running strong; this was only step number one.
Rock on.
