Big Bend National Park, Texas: 20 May 2005
BBNP sits in the craggy sag of the southwest Texas desert. The Rio Grande forms its boundary, with Mexico sitting across the river, just a stone's toss away. In spring, the river is barely more than a knee-deep trickle, but when the flash floods of the August rainy season hit, Santa Elena Canyon becomes a white water flume 20 feet deep and the river fills the wide, parched basins.
